Fasting is an extremely healthy habit, and its benefits have been recently revealed.
Since it was found that a low-calorie diet for a few days in a week
provides great effects
in the weight loss process, intermittent fasting
diets have become really popular. Moreover, fasting entirely regenerates
the immune system.
The 5:2 diet was popularized by the BBC’s Dr. Michael Mosely, and it
involves fasting for only two days, and a normal diet for the other 5
days.
His incredible weight loss was documented by an accompanying
television program, where he attributed his amazing health and youthful
look to the long-term effects of very-low-calorie diets (VLCD).
His followers reported great improvements due to the consumption of very small amounts of food over long periods of time.
One study published in the University of Southern California showed
that fasting regenerates the immune system. The weakening of cells which
are essential for our health cause various diseases, including cancer.
On the other hand, fasting ‘regenerates’ cells and produces new white
blood cells which prevent infections, and is therefore highly helpful
in the case of immune disorders.
According to professor Valter Longo, the lead researcher of the study, fasting:
“..gives the ‘OK’ for stem cells to go ahead and begin
proliferating and rebuild the entire system. And the good news is that
the body got rid of the parts of the system that might be damaged or
old, the inefficient parts, during the fasting.
Now, if you start with a system heavily damaged by chemotherapy
or aging, fasting cycles can generate, literally, a new immune system.”
